Blog Post #1 - Introduction and Goals for the Semester!

Hi there everyone! My name is Maverick Thill. I'm in my final year of the social studies education program here at UWM. I am currently doing my student teaching at St. Francis Public High School in a U.S. History classroom. For this semester, I hope to grow my confidence in teaching U.S. History through the use of primary sources. I want to show how important primary sources are to understanding the depth and relevant issues presented in U.S. History. I think too often that history is taught from solely secondary sources, or sources that look an event and write about it rather than write from the time period in question. Primary sources have the ability to shine a light on the parts of history that secondary sources, when used in isolation, can leave out. That is not to say that secondary sources don't have use, they just have more use alongside primary sources. I have attached a link which highlights effective ways in which you can annotate, or take notes on, a primary source.

Here's to a great semester!

  1. Hi Maverick! I really enjoyed reading your first blog post! I think primary sources are so important when teaching history but yet, we turn to secondary sources. I think many times primary sources contain hard English and many students might not understand it. Rather than disregard it and focus on secondary sources, students should be introduced to advanced readings so that they can learn to analyze primary sources and figure out what they are trying to say in order to get the best perspective from a certain time period.

  2. Hi Maverick!
I like that you have the goal to utilize more primary sources. I really enjoyed primary sources in school because it felt more authentic and engaging. I felt like I could draw myself into the event more when it was presented from their view. Have a great school year!
